A pivotal moment in Derrick Ong’s career was after making a major death claim, when he went to visit the widow and two sons of a client who had passed away in an accident. Seeing how his late client’s widow broke down in relief and gladness upon receiving the cheque made him realise just how profound the impact was, that his late client had made plans to secure his family even after death.
To Derrick, it is bearing the responsibility to see through that his late clients’ families are secured. “I felt like I was presenting something that meant so much to the families left behind by deaths, and that’s how I realised that I was not merely doing a job. It’s not something I enjoy but it makes me feel much better to be able to provide them with what they need the most,” he emphasises. He finds consolation in being able to guide late clients’ families through times of grief, uncertainty and fear of not knowing how to cope with financial responsibilities.
His specialisations lie in general protection, and only when clients have surplus budget then he moves on to wealth accumulation. “I resonate mostly with Giving. I give what my clients want, unconditionally.”
Derrick firmly believes that caring for his clients is the next most powerful tool besides love. “When people know how much you care, that is actually when there is a breakthrough.” How does he add value to his clients’ lives? Simply by caring for them. And his clients know it due to his responsiveness and accessibility at any time they need him, even when he is overseas.
Simply said, Derrick has never looked back since joining Prudential in 2003. Whatever is in his means, Derrick ascertains that his top priority and responsibility will always be Giving to his clients.
